Translation services and international standards

At ieb, service quality is essential. With that in mind, we aim at being in line with the best standardized practices of the market for ISO standards. Specifically, in our case, the quality standard ISO 17100 which establishes the competences and qualifications that the staff in charge of translation tasks must comply with: translators, reviewers and other professionals. This international quality standard details that “the requisites for all aspects of the translation process have a direct impact on the quality and provision of translation services”. ieb translation services began making the last necessary adjustments in their internal process to apply for certification in 2019.

Its purpose is to describe the service provided to the clients through a set of processes acknowledged as good practices.

What benefits are there for the client?

  • It guarantees that we employ qualified professionals: our translators and interpreters are certified to provide their service in an effective, professional manner in compliance with the most recent standards of the area.

The quality standard ISO 17100:2015 is an international standard that annuls and supersedes the European standard UNE-EN 15038:2006.

Resources: The standard determines the qualifications and professional competences of translators, reviewers, concept editors, translation project managers and other professionals. And it demands the regular maintenance and update record of the required competences.

Processes and pre-production activities. The standard demands the requisites for the treatment of budget requests, feasibility studies, agreements between client and translation agency, the preparation of the translation project, any administrative activities, any technical aspects of the preparation of the project, linguistic specifications and other relevant factors.

Production processes.

The different stages of the production process are detailed: the project management, the translation and self-check of the translation carried out by a professional translator, the comprehensive review of the translation by a second linguist, concept correction and tests correction – when the client hires these added value services- and the final verification and delivery of the translation by the project manager.

Post-production processes.

Unlike standard UNE EN 15038, the quality standard ISO 17100 highlights the importance of interacting with the client, both in the prior agreement, where the specifications of the project are hashed out, as well as in the treatment of possible modifications, claims and comments, the satisfaction assessment and the administration of the closure of the project.

Translation + independent review

In the same way it occurred with the standard UNE EN-15038 which is superseded, the most prominent characteristics of the standard ISO 17100 are, on one hand, the definition of the translation process, where the translation per se is only one of the stages of the process and does not guarantee the quality without a review made by a person other than the translator; and, on the other hand, the precision of the professional competences of each of the participants in the translation process, mainly translators, reviewers and translation project managers.

Every translation service in compliance with standard 17100:2015 must include, at least, translation and review.

Translation

A translator with the adequate competences translates the documents and upon the end of the initial translation, he/she verifies his/her own work.

Review

A person other than the translator reviews the translation. The standard defines review as “a bilingual comparison of the content of the target language, with the content of the source language regarding its adaptation to the planned purpose.”

Professional competences of translators and reviewers

The standard forces the suppliers of certified translation services (translation agencies, translation companies, translators teams) to work exclusively with translators who can provide documentary evidence to prove they comply with at least one of the following criteria:

-Acknowledged qualification of undergraduate degree in translation from a higher education institute;

-Acknowledged undergraduate qualification in any other filed from a higher education institute plus two years of full-time professional experience in translation.

Degrees in translation have different names in some countries: linguistic studies, language studies, etc. Undergraduate refers to the first degree in an academic title.

Reviewers, in addition to complying with one of the three requirements stated above, must have experience as translators or reviewers in the specialization field in which they revise documents.
