MemoQ, Wordfast, Memsource, Trados. The assistance tools applied for translation projects have a significant role in the daily work. They provide solutions and advantages, not only for translators, but also for the clients who trust our services.
Computer-assisted translation (CAT) is the process that involves the reproduction of a text into another language (translation) performed by someone (translator) with the help of computer software or programs which have been developed for that purpose.
They include different types of tools or specific software applications, for example, the ones that create and organize translation memories and the textual type software interactive resources editors, also called localization tools.
Many professionals who are in favor of CAT tools argue that they guarantee higher accuracy and avoid possible mistakes thanks to the grammar and spelling suggestions, which reduce the amount of words that must be added manually.
The main advantage is, without a doubt, the acceleration of the translation process and all that it implies.
In addition, considering very long texts, it is possible, in some cases, to reduce the total cost up to a 30%, depending on its repetitions.
Another advantage is that the basic text format, given by its indentation, bold type, underlines, etc. is totally and perfectly respected.
Besides, once the translation is done with CAT, it is possible to produce a report that shows, in case there are any, inconsistencies, punctuation mistakes, omissions, among others, in order to get the text closer to its best version.
Moreover, in the case of long texts, these programs allow us to keep the consistency in different parts of the document that are often repeated in the assigned task.
The Quality Department of our company made a list of the most recommended tools and their benefits.
Wordfast: has a good user interface. It can be used with a TM, a local glossary and with remote server. Transcheck is not fail-safe, but it is a good tool for quality control. It has a free online version (Wordfast anywhere) that makes it possible to receive a WF project and to open it online from any PC. It is also possible to create new projects in WF Anywhere (www.freetm.com).
memoQ: it has the same characteristics as Wordfast but it does not have a free online version.
Memsource: online CAT tool. It has a paid service for PM tasks. It is free for translators, which makes it easier to assign projects.
Trados Studio: it is one of the most important translation tools used by freelance translators and translation agencies in the world. Its main characteristic is that it makes it possible to combine several files in only one, called “project package” and it facilitates managing projects with many files. In contrast with memoQ, it is mainly used locally and without connection. Apart from the translation memories that all CAT tools use, Trados particularly offers TermBases, that allow us to define specific terminology, and includes inside quality controls which identify a wide range of mistakes.
